How to not accidentally create the Avengers:
- Beat butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add molasses, egg, vanilla, and orange zest. Pretend you’re not stress-eating the dough.
- Whisk all the dry ingredients together. Add to wet mixture gradually until it forms a soft dough. If it’s sticky, chill 30 minutes. (Dough, not you. Though both are valid.)
- Divide into two disks, wrap, chill 1 hour or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Roll dough ¼-inch thick. Cut out people, hearts, stars, or whatever shape matches your current mood.
- Bake 8–10 minutes. Edges barely set, centers still soft. They’ll finish cooking on the pan like a proper glow-up.
- Cool completely, then decorate like you’re styling them for Fashion Week. Tiny belts, micro handbags, six-packs, whatever heals you.
- Let icing dry, then store in a tin or eat them all in one sitting while watching Love Actually for the 47th time. I won’t tell.
- Yield: 18–24 perfectly proportioned cookies (or 12 absolute units if you get distracted by TikTok again).
Happy holidays, my loves. May your cookies stay soft and your situationships stay… well, at least edible.1.6sFast

Recipe Notes
- Chill the dough — don’t skip it. A 1-hour rest (or overnight) keeps the cookies thick and prevents them from spreading into gingerbread puddles.
- Roll between parchment for zero sticking and almost no extra flour (means softer cookies).
- ¼-inch thickness is the sweet spot — any thinner and they’ll turn crisp; any thicker and you’ll be baking forever.
- Bake just until the edges are set — the centers will look slightly underdone. They firm up as they cool and stay perfectly chewy.
- Royal icing tip — add water ½ tsp at a time. You want 10-second ribbon for outlining and 3–4-second flood for filling. Too runny = sad bleeding faces.
- Make-ahead magic — unbaked dough disks keep in the fridge for 3 days or freezer for 2 months. Baked, undecorated cookies freeze beautifully for 3 months.
- Gluten-free? Use a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour blend (King Arthur or Bob’s Red Mill); results are still ridiculously soft.
- Vegan version — swap butter for vegan butter, egg for ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce, and use maple syrup instead of molasses. Still slaps.
- Storage — keep decorated cookies in an airtight container up to 10 days (layers separated by parchment so their outfits don’t smudge). Or just eat them in 48 hours and call it self-care.
