What Is Humanism in the Age of AI?

📖 3 mins read

At its core, humanism is a focus on human needs, human values, human experiences, and human flourishing first and foremost. It places humans — with all our abilities, creativity, and potential — at the center of moral and philosophical concern.

Humanism is not a rigid philosophical system, a set of fixed doctrines, or a dogma. Instead, it is best understood as an attitude and perspective toward life that influences how we develop beliefs, ethics, and worldviews.

As the Encyclopedia of Social Sciences once noted:

“Humanism as a technical term… has always leaned heavily on its etymology. That which is characteristically human, not supernatural… that which raises man to his greatest height or gives him his greatest satisfaction, is apt to be called humanism.”

Humanism can mean many things: the balanced life celebrated by the ancient Greeks, the study of the humanities, a rejection of religious dogma in favor of worldly engagement, or a philosophy that puts human beings at its center.

Humanism vs. Supernaturalism

Humanism stands in contrast to supernaturalism — any worldview that prioritizes a transcendent, divine realm over the natural world. Supernaturalism often claims that true meaning, morality, or purpose comes from gods, souls, or an afterlife, sometimes at the expense of human well-being in the here and now.

Humanists reject this. We believe meaning, ethics, and purpose arise from human experience and reason.

Humanism vs. Dehumanizing Scientism

Humanism also rejects extreme forms of scientism — the view that reduces humans to mere data points, biological machines, or insignificant specks in a vast universe, stripping away the importance of subjective experience, emotions, creativity, and values.

While humanists fully embrace science and naturalistic explanations, we oppose any tendency (scientific or technological) that dehumanizes people.

Humanism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Today, this balanced humanistic perspective is more important than ever. AI is advancing rapidly and raising profound questions:

  • Should AI systems be designed primarily to serve human flourishing, or should they optimize for profit, efficiency, or power?
  • As machines become more capable, how do we protect human creativity, purpose, and dignity?
  • What does it mean to be human when AI can write, create art, hold conversations, and make decisions better than many people?

Humanism provides a vital framework here. It insists that:

  • Technology must serve human values, not the other way around.
  • Even if the universe itself is indifferent, human life has inherent value.
  • We should not allow AI to reduce people to data, consumers, or cogs in a machine.
  • Morality, rights, and ethics must remain grounded in human experience, not in algorithms or corporate goals.

A humanistic approach to AI emphasizes human well-being, autonomy, creativity, and fairness. It asks: How can we use AI to enhance human life — to reduce suffering, expand knowledge, and increase opportunity — without surrendering what makes us human?

Core Principles of Humanism

A philosophy, worldview, or approach is “humanistic” when it shows a primary concern with:

  • Human needs, desires, and potential
  • Morality based on human nature and experience rather than divine commands
  • Valuing human life and happiness, while respecting the rights of others
  • Using reason, science, and compassion to solve problems

In the age of AI, humanism serves as a necessary counterbalance — protecting human dignity against both old religious authoritarianism and new technological dehumanization.
