“Excuse me.”

Jane looked up at the sound of a deep, raspy male voice, but didn’t slow her fast walk down Michigan Avenue.

“I’m sorry to bother you, but-“

A body stopped in front of her and Jane blinked owlishly at the tall, black haired man with cat-hazel eyes and a poet’s mouth.

“Could you please tell me where I can find?” He gave the address of her office building.

“Sorry, um, it’s like, three buildings down on the opposite side of the street,” she pointed.

“Thank you,” the stranger smiled, flashing straight white teeth at her.

“Sure,” Jane mumbled, and hurried off.

Yeah, she thought, I’m in such a big old hurry. Rushing off to get my usual soup and crackers from the deli. I’m embarrassingly horny, she thought. I’ve been lusting after every cute guy I’ve seen for months!

“I need to get laid,” she whispered, and her head whipped around to make sure no one had overheard, but the sidewalk was crowded at lunchtime. Everyone bustling off to wherever, heads down against the strong downtown wind.

“Our new guy’s here,” Vashti the receptionist whispered when Jane came back. “Wait till you see him! He’s fabulous!”

Jane grunted and went to her desk to eat. Vashti’s last idea of fabulous had been 5’6″, pale as a ghost and almost expressionless.

“Oh, my God. Have you seen the new guy?” Diana demanded. “He’s fabulous!”

“That seems to be the general consensus,” Jane agreed, smashing saltines to put in her chili.

“He’s one of the recruiters,” Diana went on, patting her blond curls complacently. “His office is two doors down from yours. You should come to my desk and casually peek in and introduce yourself.”

“I’ll meet him when they introduce him this afternoon just like everyone else.”

Diana sucked her teeth in disgust. “You’re not even curious? You’re abnormal. Nothing interests you but those silly graphics you’re always making!”

Jane ate slowly after Diana flounced out. That hadn’t been a very nice thing to say. The girl made it sound like she was humorless and absorbed in work. She wasn’t that way at all. Was she? Instead of being careful and responsible the way she’d vowed to be after college, had she become boring? She’d worked steadily in the same company for the past five years, promoted up through the ranks from administrative assistant to marketing coordinator and now to communications manager, but that didn’t make her abnormal. It was a tough economy. No one was job-hopping for excitement these days. People were too busy trying to get a regular paycheck.

Silly cow, Jane thought, banishing Diana from her mind and focusing her attention on the brochure she’d been asked to put together for an upcoming conference. Anybody who lived their life according to the cliché blondes really do have more fun, was not to be trusted or taken seriously!

A few hours later a disembodied voice interrupted Jane’s thoughts.

“Jane?”

Jane depressed the intercom button on her phone. “Yes?”

“Come into the conference room. We’re welcoming the new associate.”

“Thanks. There in a second.” Now, let’s see this Mr. Fabulous, she thought.

The conference room was crowded. All the seats had been taken and at first Jane had a little trouble seeing over shoulders until Vashti elbowed a male admin aside and gestured for her to take his place. That’s when she saw him, Mr. Fabulous, the man who’d asked her for directions on the street.

“Everyone, I’d like you to welcome Robert Craig, our new recruiting associate. Robert comes highly recommended from one of our chief competitors, who shall remain nameless,” Diana’s boss Tristan said, grinning. “Please make him feel welcome and show him the ropes at GHD.”

Vashti snagged one of the pastries that had been laid out on the conference table. “You want your usual?” she asked.

Jane nodded and accepted a piece of the raspberry crumble coffee cake she favored. She couldn’t take her eyes off Robert Craig. He looked over, perhaps he’d felt the warmth of her gaze on his flesh, and smiled and nodded at her. Jane turned away in confusion. She was nibbling the pastry at her desk when a shadow fell over her.

“Thanks for helping me earlier,” said Robert, his deep voice sending the shivers down her spine like a virgin in a Harlequin Romance novel. “I’d heard the city was a cold fast place; I never believed it til I tried to ask for directions and everyone ignored me!” He laughed.

“All Chicagoans aren’t like that,” Jane said quickly, “Where are you from?”

“I’m from Garland Texas originally. I’ve been living in Dallas for the past few years working with-“

Jane quickly held up a small hand. “No! Don’t say it. If Tristan hears that name on the premises!”

Robert laughed. “Thanks for the warning. I won’t dare mention it.”

Jane smiled and then felt her cheeks grow warm as he continued to stare down at her. “Well,” she flapped a hand toward her computer screen.

“Oh, sorry for interrupting. I’ll let you get back to work. Thanks again.”

Jane ducked her eyes in embarrassment and when she looked up again, Robert was gone.

It didn’t take long for the girls at GHD to fall in love with Robert.

“Call me Robby,” he told everyone.

The women in the office shivered when they heard his deep voice or watched his tall, broad shouldered body striding along the halls. The men slapped his back, and discussed sports scores and the best bars to hang out in for buffet and babes after the game.

Jane tried her best to avoid Robert. Especially after Vashti caught her staring at him in a meeting, but it wasn’t easy. Naturally he’d been included in the company’s new sales reorganization initiative, for which she was designing new sales brochures and conference materials, so they had to collaborate. She seemed to bump into him everywhere; in the halls on her way from the bathroom or riding down to the lobby in the close confines of a crowded elevator. Jane tried to ignore the broad shoulder pressed against hers. She tried not to inhale his distinctive smell, the subtle but arresting scent of cedar and something soapy like Irish Spring, but her nostrils flared appreciatively as she took it in.

“Excuse me,” she whispered when they passed each other in the hall outside his office.

Ordinarily there was more than enough room, but that day one of the admin’s had dropped an armload of files, and they got close trying to avoid stepping on anything.

“Come in and see my new space,” he invited her, and Jane stepped over the grumbling admin into his square office with its floor to ceiling windows and a heart stopping view of Michigan Avenue and the lake.

“I should probably have helped her,” Jane said, moving quickly aside as he moved close to go behind this desk. She moved too quickly and a stack of papers on the edge toppled over.

Robert laughed. “Why not help me instead?”

“I’m so sorry, Robert. I hope they weren’t in a special order.”

“Only alphabetical,” he teased, crouching beside her to collect the scattered papers.

Jane grinned and their eyes met as their hands busily sorted and stacked.

“Your view is awesome. Kind of scary at first though, staring down from the 35th floor.”

“It gave me vertigo the first time I came in here,” he admitted. “But now I walk up and rest my head against the glass while I look down.” He paused and looked at her. “Jane’s an interesting name,” he said, hand brushing hers as they reached for the last piece of paper.

“Are you being funny? It’s got to be the plainest name ever.”

“Maybe it’s old-fashioned, but it’s also rare these days to meet someone named Jane,” he said, taking the papers from her as they rose. “Careful,” he said as she stumbled.

“Almost lost my shoe,” she laughed and quick as that, he kissed her.

Jane was so startled at first she froze, letting his warm lips move delicately over hers.

“I knew it would be like this,” he whispered, snaring her in a voluptuous kiss and sucking her bottom lip into the wet warmth of his mouth.

He pressed her more closely against his front, shaping the curves of her ass and she felt his erection against her belly.

“As soon as I saw you in the office, glasses sliding off the edge of your nose, those big brown eyes peeping up at me, I knew you’d be hot.” His big hands moved restlessly over her back, sliding up into her red hair to tug her head back and expose the pale length of her neck for his kisses.

“You’re so, perfect,” he groaned into her breasts.

Jane gasped at the wet lick of his tongue in her cleavage. He’d pulled her comfortably baggy blouse with its prim round collar down to expose one full breast and as she watched he began to flay the nipple with his tongue. Jane felt like she’d been sucked into a whirlwind. There was a sharp pull in the pit of her belly and as he took the tip into his mouth, it spread to tingle her clit until moisture dampened her cotton undies.

“Someone could come in,” she whispered, then realized that probably wasn’t what she should be saying.

Robert broke away and wedged a chair under the doorknob. He pulled her back into his arms and into his kiss in almost the same movement. Jane felt like she had vertigo, like she’d been standing with her head against the glass of his window. Her heart was pounding against her chest and she had no idea how wanton she looked with her once sensible clothes twisted around her slender body, red lips swollen and parted from his frantic kisses.

“We won’t do it here,” he told her, pushing her skirt up as he ran hot hands over her thighs. “I just want to touch you a little, kiss that mouth, smell your skin.”

He overwhelmed her with squeezing caresses as he spoke, whispering what he would do to her if they weren’t in the office, separated from the entire company by a thin wooden door.

“I’d strip those worker bee clothes off you so fast,” he said, backing her against the wall. He lifted her until both legs settled around his waist and he could rub himself into the hot V of her body. “I’d leave those glasses where they are, right on top of your head while I find my way inside your-“

There was a knock at the door. “Robert?”

Jane gasped and began to struggle in his arms. Robert cursed against her neck and reluctantly let her legs slide down to the floor. As Jane pulled her clothes frantically into place, someone tried the door handle.

“Just a second! I’ve got him, now! There!”

Robert pushed the chair aside and yanked open the door. Vashti stood there eying them with large interested grey eyes.

“I just killed a spider,” he told her, grinning and holding out a hand for the FedEx package she was holding. “Thanks!”

Jane avoided Vashti’s eyes and pretended intense interest in the stack of papers on the corner of Robert’s desk. When Vashti was gone she sighed shakily, smoothed her skirt over her hips and moved to escape. Robert stepped in front of her and tipped up her chin with a large finger.

“We’ll continue this later, Jane,” he rasped and Jane fled, almost running back to her desk she was walking so fast.

That night she ran the scene in the office over and over in her mind. She got so hot thinking about it she had to rub herself to sleep. Luckily it was Friday so she didn’t have to see Robert again until Monday, and not even then if I have my way, Jane thought. But she was wrong. She had just dozed off a little after 11 o’clock that night when her phone rang.

“Hello?” she whispered without opening her eyes.

“I’m outside your apartment.”

Jane sat straight up in bed and swung toward the window. She scrambled from bed, almost tripping as the bedclothes tangled around her legs. She stumbled to the window and pushed the curtains aside. There he was, standing on the sidewalk below holding his cell to his ear.

“Let me in,” he said when she opened the window.

Jane was momentarily stunned. Should she let him in? She couldn’t let him in! He was as stranger! Well, almost. They knew each other from the office, but it just wasn’t done, letting a strange man come into your apartment in the middle of the night. Then she thought, what decade are you from, Jane?

“What do you want?” She whispered.

“I want to come in and talk to you.”

He wanted to talk. Wasn’t that what all men said when they were trying to get in your house to sleep with you?

“Well, just for a minute. It’s late. You should be home.” In your own bed, Jane thought.

She let him in, quickly throwing the blankets over her tumbled bed. It was the only place to sit in her small studio.

“Hi,” he said, after he’d come in and sat down.

Jane fidgeted a bit. “Hi. Do you live in this neighborhood?”

“No.”

Jane waited for him to elaborate. He didn’t, just sat there and stared at her.

“Well, what are you doing here then? How did you know where I live?”

He grinned at her. “Impatient are you? It’s late for you to be so wound up.” He reached out and pulled her onto the bed beside him. “I’m here because I couldn’t sleep thinking about today in my office. I wanted you to give me a good night kiss.”

Jane looked skeptical. “Just a good night kiss?”

He nodded innocently and pursed his lips like a child. Jane grinned, charmed, and bent to kiss his mouth willingly, but when she would have moved away after that brief touch his lips opened and his arms came up to hold her.

“See! I knew it,” she struggled out of his arms. “I must be stupid.”

“No,” he said, retaining hold of one small hand. “What you are is sexy. Just let me kiss you a little,” he coaxed. “I promise I won’t push it. I won’t,” he kissed the tips of her fingers. “Try to sleep with you tonight.”

Jane was more than tempted. She remembered his idea of kissing her a little from his office earlier that day. It was actually a whole lot!

“I want to kiss you,” she whispered. “But I don’t want to,” she broke off. “We work together and I don’t-“

“Shhh. It’s all right. I understand,” he whispered, pulling her back into his lap.

Jane wasn’t naïve. At least, she liked to think she wasn’t naïve. She knew that this man wanted to have sex with her. She wanted to have sex with him too, but some old-fashioned puritan streak in her balked at the idea of giving in so easily. They’d known each other for exactly one month. Today was the first time they’d ever kissed. A kiss Jane had been thinking about all night!

Robert looked into her eyes, and she watched his lids drift shut as he kissed her. Jane couldn’t remember any sequence after that. When she recalled the moment later, all she could remember were feelings. Her mind had nothing to contribute but her body had no trouble creating echoes of the pleasure he’d given her as he held her on his lap like a child, nibbling gently at her neck and chin, sucking teasingly at her upper lip.

He’d run his hands over her back and arms as though to soothe her. It was Jane who deepened their kiss, stretching her tongue to his with a whispery sigh. Then his touch changed, quickened, roughened, became more urgent. His hands roamed all over her body. He weighed her breasts, massaging them with soft pressure. He circled her waist with his hands and tangled her aching limbs with his. He moaned softly as his lips investigated the gaps in her nightshirt. It went on and on. His fingers flirted with her panty line then snaked underneath and rubbed her until she was slippery and writhing against his hand.

“Enough,” he growled, rolling away from her.

Jane blinked in confusion, her chest heaving a bit as she focused on him, laying on his back, one muscular forearm thrown over his eyes. Her nightshirt was hiked above her waist, panties half down her legs. She turned her back as she pulled herself together. He touched her and clicked his tongue when she jumped.

“Don’t be embarrassed.”

“I’m not,” she denied, but couldn’t meet his eyes.

“I’m going to stay here with you for a few minutes, okay? I need to get my breath back. You got my heart beating fast, girl,” he teased, pulling her against his body.

Jane smiled against his shoulder and after a while drifted off to asleep. Robert shifted her gently from his chest to the bed and tugged the sheets over her. He fought an urge to get back into the bed and settled for stroking a hand down her back. He grinned when she made a noise in her sleep and moved sinuously beneath the sheets. He hadn’t made out like that in years with no finale and he was a bit uncomfortable. But he whistled as he left her apartment and tested that the lock was in place. Tomorrow promised to be very interesting.

Tomorrow was Saturday and there was no work. Worried that he might call, Jane unplugged her phone and stayed away from the front window. She busied herself cleaning the apartment from top to bottom. She’d woken up late, but it was a small apartment and though she washed and folded several loads of clothes, she was still finished by lunchtime.

Ordinarily she’d have gone to one of the little cafes in the neighborhood to get soup or a sandwich but she couldn’t bring herself to leave the safety of her apartment.

“You’re being ridiculous!” She told her reflection in the bathroom mirror. “That man is not thinking about you. You’re trapped in your own home, starving because he might be outside. He’s probably got a million more interesting things to do than make out with an inexperienced little twit from the office.”

Jane grabbed her purse and left. She walked around for a while, peering into windows, but none of the tempting treats on display looked good enough to buy. Finally, when her stomach started to growl in earnest, she went into the grocery store and bought a large bag of cherries. She would carry them home, wash them, and eat them while reading. Maybe I’ll watch a movie, she thought turning the corner of her street.

Robert was sitting on her front steps. He rose as she approached and Jane forced herself to smile and speak calmly.

“Hi,” she said, struggling to breathe normally and hoping he wouldn’t notice how false her cheery tone sounded.

“Hi,” he answered. “Are you busy?”

Jane shook her head no before she thought about it, then forgot all about caution as he smiled and held out his hand to her.

“Mind if I come in and visit with you for awhile?”
She shook her head no and led the way into her apartment.

“You’ve been cleaning.”

She nodded and let go of his hand to go wash her cherries. He followed, standing there silently watching as she rinsed and arranged the bright red fruit in a lime green ceramic bowl and sprinkled a little powdered sugar over the top.

He reached for a cherry and held it to her lips. Their eyes met as she took the sweet fruit and bit down. It was good, so tart her eyes squinched up, and he laughed as one watered. He watched her mouth as she worked the flesh from the tiny pit. He held out his hand when she finished and slowly, she spat the pip into his palm.

“How old are you?”

“24,” Jane answered. “How old are you?”

“29.”

He was very young to hold the job he did at GHD. She told him so.

He shrugged, stepping closer to her. “I believe in working hard for what I want.”

Jane swallowed nervously and reached for a cherry. “I was just going to watch a movie.”

“What are we watching?”

“Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis.”

“You forgot Jack Lemmon.”

Jane laughed, pleased that he’d seen the film. “No, I didn’t.”

Jane was a little nervous after she put in the DVD. The TV was set up right in front of her bed where they had to sit, but Robby did nothing more than pull her against his side as the credits rolled and they watched Tony Curtis charm his way in and out of trouble. She relaxed as one of his large hands played with her long black curls, rubbed soothingly at her scalp, rhythmically up and down her arm. After awhile she fell sleep. She didn’t notice when he slipped the socks from her feet and laid her back against the pillows. She didn’t stir when he turned off the TV and turned on her stereo.

She sighed when he smoothed a long finger over her brows and gently traced the outline of her mouth with his thumb, but soon snuggled back into the covers.

Robert puttered around her place for a while, looking at her pictures, movies and books, peeking into her closet and poking about on her bureau. He realized she was even more innocent than he thought. Her tastes ran to romance novels and romantic movies while her clothes seemed low-key and boring, designed to cover and not draw attention to the surprisingly voluptuous little body he’d discovered last night. He wondered what he was doing there.

He wasn’t a player. He didn’t coax as many women in and out of his bed as he could. He was southern. His mother would have clipped off his balls if she discovered he’d treated a woman so callously. He preferred to get to know one woman at a time and let the sexual chemistry build before he took her to bed. He let them take the lead, happy to move at whatever pace they set. He usually kept his girlfriends around for a few months, until he lost interest or the woman began to hint, as women invariably do, that she wouldn’t mind committing to just him.

Eventually, they got tired of making the first move, of asking him to dinner or to a show, and he’d smile and slide out as gracefully as he could, leaving flowers and hopefully good memories in his wake. Consequently he had a lot of women as friends, some of whom were past lovers. They liked his old-fashioned courtesy, courtly manners and habit of talking to his parents in Texas once a week. But he’d never found a woman so interesting that the thought of the next woman could entice him to stay.

He’d liked Jane immediately. It had been a pleasant surprise to find out the shy little mouse who’d given him directions on the street actually worked in his office. He watched her in meetings, liked her shy, witty humor when he caught her talking outside her office or up front getting her packages from Vashti at the reception desk. He liked her modesty. Her habit of cutting her eyes away from his and chewing nervously on that full lower lip made him want to grab her and knock that prim shyness for six.

And that’s what he did. When she’d left his office that day, practically skipping down that hall in her haste to get away from him, he’d sat down in his chair amazed. He’d grabbed a coworker, practically undressed her and half-fucked her against a wall in his office! It wasn’t done, at least not by him, but he hadn’t been able to get her taste out of his mouth nor her scent from his skin. His work had been for shit that day. He couldn’t concentrate on the phone, couldn’t focus to follow up any sales leads. He’d ended up filing, watching the clock and doing mindless admin stuff just to keep the day from being a total waste.

By 5 o’clock his office was immaculate and he’d written down Jane’s information from the company directory. He went to the gym after work, had dinner and drinks with a male friend, and was standing outside her window by 10:30, dithering until he finally swore and dialed her number. Now he’d been in her bed, shared intimacies he doubted she’d allowed many other men and for once it was he who wondered where this was all going to lead.

There was a rustling from the bed and he turned to see her sit up and look around. She didn’t see him immediately half hidden as he was by the screen she’d set up in one corner.

“Finally woke up, hmmm?”

Jane gasped in surprise, then a shy, pretty smile brightened her face. “I thought you’d gone.”

He shook his head and lay down beside her on the bed. He looked up at her, deliberately placing himself in a submissive position. He blinked heavily lashed, soulful brown eyes at her and watched her soften and sigh. He reached up to touch her face and she was in his arms, her curvy little body snuggling trustingly against his.

“You’re so innocent,” he whispered.

“I’m not a virgin,” she told him.

Robby grinned. “You’re an old hat at this, hmmm?”

Jane grinned. “I’ve done it twice before.”

“Slut,” he whispered, nuzzling her neck and she giggled.

“I bet you’ve done it more than twice.”

“Well, I never!” He pretended to be miffed, deepening his southern accent til it drawled out like warm honey. “Pure as the driven snow, I am. It’s you, you city girl, trying to corrupt a sweet southern gentleman.”

“Yes,” she answered, kissing him. “I am.”

Robby couldn’t help the way his body leapt in response to her soft affirmative. He forced himself to move slowly, distracting her with nibbling kisses as he reached beneath her skirt to slide the tiny cotton panties down her legs. The skirt followed her sleeveless t-shirt onto the floor and he leaned back to look at her soft tan and cream body.

“You’re so pretty,” he whispered and squeezed her. He teased and caressed every inch of her soft skin until her breathing grew ragged and her hands impatient as she tugged his shirt open and pressed herself against him. His hand rubbed gently at the black curls between her legs, his heart thudding when she sighed and her legs fell voluptuously open. One long finger slipped inside to test her and she sighed, pushing gently on his finger.

He rolled away from her so fast, Jane fell on her face, pushing up to see him pulling his clothes off. He didn’t give her a chance to cool, coming back to the bed he lay full on top of her and tugged her legs apart so that he could get between them.

“I want you,” he whispered against her lips, his nose gently rubbing hers in the same rhythm his dick rubbed against her mound. “Will you let me have you, Jane?”
Jane nodded, unable to speak. “We should, there’s some, I have,” she faltered.

He knew what she was trying to say and reached over to yank open the nightstand drawer she gestured to. He pulled out a box of condoms. It was open but none had been used.

She shifted then, rubbing herself softly against him and he groaned, shaking the box impatiently and she laughed as the shiny foil packets spilled onto the bed.

She laughed again as he ripped one open with his teeth and sat back to roll it on. Robby looked up to see her watching him, lips parted and moist from his kisses, breasts heaving just a bit in anticipation and he groaned, all thoughts of gentleness fading as he ground their bodies together and kissed her hard and fast and wet until she was gasping and running her hands feverishly up and down his back.

His hand slipped between her legs. She was warm and slippery and she moaned at the touch of his fingers on her clit, legs falling wide as he rubbed rhythmically, lips pulling strongly at one full breast as her juices covered his fingers and her gasping breaths filled the room.

He pushed at the portal of her body, shuddering as the top of his penis slid into her warmth. She was so tight, yet she took him joyfully, a delicious moan escaped her lips and her long legs caressed his flanks before they tightened around the small of his back.

Robby trembled at her languid movements. He shivered as she raised her legs higher and clenched her inner muscles around him.

“Please,” she whispered. She wanted him to move and when he did she moaned and sighed and squeezed him until he thought he would burst.

He couldn’t take it, his brain wanted to disconnect and let his body take over but he knew if he did it wouldn’t last. He moved slowly, prolonging the exquisite friction that made him want to sink hip deep into her body. She moved beneath him, matching his soft strokes and he groaned, “No, Jane,” against her soft damp skin.

She froze, opening startled brown eyes.

“If you do that this won’t last and I want you to enjoy it,” he whispered, and she smiled and relaxed.

“But I’m close,” she rasped, hips moving strong again. “If you hold out just a little bit,” she moaned, and he gritted his teeth as her body rolled and pitched beneath his. She moved faster and he cursed, straining until he heard, “I’ll- oh, Rob-by.”

He felt her spasm around him and thrust into her once, twice more and then he jerked, and collapsed, smooshing her into the comforter.

“You turned me out,” he whispered, when he could speak again. He rolled to the side and pulled her on top of him. “You, miss, I’ve done this twice before have completely wrung me dry.”

Jane giggled and twisted her hips a bit, watching as he bit his lip.

“Stop it, woman. Let me get my breath back at least.” He pressed her head down onto his shoulder and twitched the sheet over them. Seconds later he was asleep.

Jane sighed and lay quietly listening to his deep even breaths. Who says blonds have more fun? Sometimes, like now, she thought, being an innocent little twit had its advantages.
