A classic 12-inch traditional block perfect for scrap quilts! Beginner-friendly with easy piecing and beautiful results.
If you think you've seen the Road to California quilt block before but with a different name, you're probably right! There are loads of traditional quilt blocks with the same basic layout, and with layouts that are very similar (like Jacob's Ladder). And the reverse is true too - completely different designs have been called Road to California and Rocky Road to California. This version finishes at 12" square, makes a lovely scrap quilt, and is beginner-friendly - new quilters will be able to make it with ease!
12" finished block shown with scrappy fabrics
| Fabric | Cut Size | Number | Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Background | 3.5" x 3.5" | 4 squares | Corner squares |
| Scraps | 2" x 2" | 16 squares | Four-patch units |
| Scraps | 2" x 3.5" | 8 rectangles | Rail units |
Tip: For a scrappy look, cut the 16 small squares from 8 different fabrics (2 squares of each). Cut the 8 rectangles from 4 different fabrics (2 rectangles of each).
You need to make FOUR four-patch units for this block. Each four-patch uses four of the 2" squares.
