A big, crystal clear chunk of ice can really set a glass of brown liquor apart. Not only is clear ice pleasing to look at, it melts slightly slower, so less water gets into your drink. Clear ice is a crowd pleaser, but it’s not hard to make if you freeze hot water in a 5 quart cooler for 24 hours. You’ll end up with a flawless slab that can be cut down into cubes of any size. From now on, cloudy ice is just going to seem second rate.
Ingredients
- 2 oz. bourbon or rye whiskey
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1/4 oz. 2:1 rich simple syrup (or one sugar cube if preferred)
How to Make It
In an Old Fashioned glass, add the syrup, bitters and orange peel. Use a muddler to gently press the orange peel to release the citrus oils. Add the whiskey and stir. Add ice cubes and stir again.
