RIP-Country singer Toby Keith dead at 62 after stomach cancer battle

The sad news is true. Country music icon Toby Keith died Monday after a battle with stomach cancer, his team announced on social media. He was 62.

“Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family,” the statement read.

“He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”

The “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” crooner first announced his diagnosis in June 2022 after already having gone through extensive treatment.

“I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good,” he shared at the time.

“I need time to breathe, recover and relax.”

Just six months later, Keith called his battle against the disease “pretty debilitating” but was trying to get back into “fighting shape.”

He appeared to have turned a corner, as he shared in June 2023 that he was “feeling pretty good”; however, he still remained concerned about his prognosis.

“Basically, everything is in a real positive trend,” he told The Oklahoman, “[but] you never know with cancer, so you have to prepare.”

Just a few weeks ago, the “Red Solo Cup” singer indicated that throughout his intensive treatments he found peace through his unwavering faith.

“I got to the point where I was comfortable with whatever happened,” he told 9News. “I had my brain wrapped around it, and I was in a good spot either way.”

He credited his wife, Tricia, for being the “best nurse” he could have by his side.

“She’s been a trooper. She stepped right in, took control, and said, ‘We got this,’” Keith said.

Born in Clinton, Oklahoma, and raised in Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City, Keith broke through the country music scene in the 1990s before skyrocketing to fame. His most recent album, “100% Songwriter,” was released in November.

Keith is survived by his wife, his two children, Stelen and Krystal, and a stepdaughter named Shelley.
