💖 Chapter 1 💖

“Fuck!” Carrie said slamming her fists on the steering wheel of her beloved ’65 Ford pick-up truck.

“Damn it, why didn’t I get that gauge fixed before I left?! I know better than this.” She slammed the wheel again as if doing so would bring life to the now lifeless, and apparently gasless, truck.

Slowly she sat back, running one hand through her short, blonde, and tousled hair. Her green eyes searched the rearview mirror for any sign of life. Her view of rolling grassy hills, and cows wasn’t very reassuring. She thought back to the last sign she had seen, 10 miles to Clinton, MT. 10 miles seemed like a long fucking ways.

Taking a deep breathe she reached for her water bottle and her cell phone. The water was warm, the cell phone dead. I am having the luck, aren’t I, she thought as she sipped the warm liquid. Ok, Carrie, get it together, she thought as she rifled through her bag looking for her last protein bar. The sun is starting to set; it’s going to be dark soon, so I’ll just get comfy until someone comes along. It’s not exactly rush hour in Seattle, but eventually someone will drive by, she thought as she munched the last of the tasteless bars that she had come to live on in the last few days. At least its summer, she thought as the idea of sleeping in the back of her truck began to chew at her brain.

Idly she pulled at the frayed hem of her cutoffs, while gazing out the window at the endless country side. There were mountains in the distance and for a moment Carrie forgot her predicament and enjoyed the beauty. Feeling the kinks from driving for nearly nine hours she slowly got out of the truck and stretched. Her white tank top lifting to reveal her tanned skin as she reached for the sky, which had been turned pink by the setting sun. She then bent over, reaching for the brown earth, feeling the stretch in her long, toned legs, a slight breeze reaching her nether regions as her cutoffs rode up an inch or two.

Feeling better she checked her watch, 8:15. She checked the road again for any sight of cars. Nothing. Not wanting to get back in the cab she put down her tailgate and hopped up, bare feet swinging in the cooling air. If I’m going to be stuck here awhile I might as well try and enjoy the sunset, she thought, grabbing another water bottle from the case she had bought on her way out of Seattle.

As she twisted the lid, she was startled by a sudden movement off to her left. In the distance, just cresting a hill on his horse, was a tall man in a cowboy hat. Hope flooded Carrie as she jumped up from the tailgate and started shouting, waving her hands back and forth.

It wasn’t too hard to get his attention; he had been heading right in her direction. She could feel a sigh of relief as he slowly approached her truck. Looks like my luck is changing, she thought as she jumped down to meet her rescuer.

The closer he got, the luckier she felt. She had noticed he was tall. He seemed to sit as high in his saddle as the horse stood of the ground. Of course the hat added height, but still . . . he was a tall one. Now that he was only 30 or so feet away she began to notice other things, like long muscular legs, a powerful build, and big, big hands. One of which reached up to tip his hat at her in a gentlemanly gesture she found endearing. Hmmmm . . . if you have to be rescued, she thought, this was certainly the way to go.

When at least he reached her, Carrie found words hard to come by. He wasn’t just good looking, he was breathtaking. Blue eyes flashed above a wicked smile that was only slightly hidden by his mustache. This is the way cowboys are supposed to look, she thought, as her gaze fell to his worn, snug Wrangler’s, that showed off his strong thighs and obviously well endowed manhood. Quickly she took another drink from her water bottle; her mouth had gone as dry as the earth that billowed up behind the beautiful Chestnut horse coming to a halt beside her truck.

“Evening. My name is Jake. You having some trouble with your truck?” He said, as he relaxed the reigns and rested his hands on the horn of the saddle.

Finding her voice, Carrie shot him a sheepish grin, “Yea. I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but I ran out of gas. The gauge is broken and I’ve been too broke to get it fixed. I thought I could make it to the next town, but . . . I guess not.” She said, shrugging and rolling her eyes at her own stupidity.

“Well, I’ve got a ranch a few miles over those hills,” he said as he pointed south toward tree covered hills in the far distance. “Always got extra gas. I can ride back and grab some. It’ll take a bit. Lady here has had a long day and is in no mood for a run I’m afraid, but it won’t take me long to get back once I get there. I’ll just trade Lady in for my pickup.” He grinned as he scratched Lady between the ears.

“Do you want to wait here? You’re more than welcome to ride back with me if you’re worried about waiting here alone.”

His gaze seemed to pierce straight through her and she felt tingling sensation run through her stomach a few times before settling in her pelvis.

“I’ll ride with you, if Lady doesn’t mind. I’ve been talking to myself for the last 300 miles or so and even I’m starting to find myself boring.” She laughed as she reached in her truck and grabbed her tennis shoes.

She felt a chill run down her arms at the thought of sitting behind those broad shoulders and trim waist. Was she supposed to hold on to him or to the saddle behind her? She knew what she wanted to touch, but he was a stranger after all.

After locking everything up and pocketing her truck keys she turned to him expectantly.

“Why don’t you hop up on the tailgate again and slide in behind me. Lady won’t mind. She’s a tolerant old girl.”

Carrie did as suggested and almost sighed as she sat snug against his warm back and tight ass. She could smell aftershave mingled with sun, earth and horse. Her heart started to pound in her ears as she struggled with where to put her hands. Silently he reached back and gently took her small hands in his own large ones and placed them around his waist.

“I hope I’m not being too familiar, but it’s safer to hold onto me than to put your hands behind you on the saddle. Especially if you’re not used to riding.”

“No,” she said. “It’s fine. Thank you.” She smiled to herself as they slowly set off toward the stand of trees in the distance.

Now, she could not only see the strength of his body, she could feel it. His stomach was tight from years of riding. The muscles in his back were hard against her soft breasts. She couldn’t help but wonder if he was as aroused as she was.

She didn’t have to wait long to find out. Lady leaped over an old log, catching Carrie unaware. Carrie fell slightly backward and reached out to grab hold again before falling off. What she grabbed was slightly more south than his waist and was as large and firm as a good sized rock. She smiled to herself again as she quickly relocated her hands back to his middle.

“Uh, sorry.” She blushed.

“Not a problem.” He said, sounding as comfortable as if they were talking about bumping heads.

His voice was deep, gentle and incredibly male. Carrie could feel his words slide over her body like a warm shower. An image of taking a shower with him suddenly came to mind and she squirmed a little in the saddle. She could almost feel the water droplets running down her naked breasts as she pictured him drinking from her skin, suckling her nipples. The thought made them harden against the thin fabric of her tank top.

Trying to distract herself, Carrie asked him about his ranch, his family and whatever else she could think of. She was foolishly pleased to find that he lived alone, except for a few ranch hands and a housekeeper. She now found herself distracted by the thought of his big empty house that must surely be begging for some female fun.

Carrie would never have considered herself easy. She loved men, and she loved sex, but she had always been somewhat discerning in her choices. She was careful about the beds she slept in, but once she found a lover that suited her she would ride the ride with abandon. Wasn’t that what life was about? Unfortunately her last lover had become a little too serious about his intentions and had even gone so far as to talk about marriage. Carrie had no intention of getting married… ever. So she had hopped in her truck with a case of water, a box of protein bars, a duffel bag of clothes, and had headed East on I-90, not knowing where she was headed, just knowing she had to get away. She had always had the adventure bug anyway and had been in Seattle way over her usual two years.

Montana was just a state she was passing through, she thought as her arms involuntarily tightened around Jake’s waist. Well, perhaps it wouldn’t hurt her to spend the night. Especially since it would be total darkness by the time they got back to the truck with the gas. Maybe Jake had a guest room.

She wasn’t sure why, but she felt completely safe with this perfect stranger. She could hear her mother’s voice echoing a warning in her head about stranger danger, but she just couldn’t take her seriously this time. Carrie was usually fairly cautious, but for some reason caution seemed ridiculous with this man. He simply oozed comfort, safety and… well, for lack of a better term, heroism. Satisfied with her assessment, Carrie settled in more closely against Jakes back resting her cheek against him. Exhausted by the long day she closed her eyes and allowed herself to be lulled by the sway of the horse.

~•••~

Jake could hear her breathing change and knew that she had dozed off. Her arms were still wrapped around his waist, and seemed to be holding on, but their grip had slackened. Her hands were small and tidy, with nails unpainted and trimmed short. Lightly he took one in his own, measuring it palm to palm. He liked the feel of her hand in his, light and warm. Jake had never gone in for women that gussied themselves up too much. The minute he had seen Carrie, standing in the back of her truck in her little shorts, tank top and bare feet, he had felt a tug at his groin.

He wasn’t sure where she was from. She didn’t look city to him, with her casual clothes and manner. She didn’t really look country to him either, although he couldn’t name why. Perhaps it was the case of bottled water and the protein bar wrapper. In any case, she had a look about her that Jake liked, and he’d been uncomfortable in his jeans since they’d met.

He put her hand back around his waist and looked west toward the setting sun. It would be dark by the time they got back to his ranch. He thought about offering her a place to stay. She was obviously exhausted. He smiled at the thought of seeing her in the morning light. He imagined she would look good in one of his old t-shirts, and the thought made him hard again, well, harder still. Jake shifted in the saddle, trying, unsuccessfully, to ease the tension.

~•••~

Jake stood under the waterfall; eyes closed, head back, with the water streaming over his naked body. Carrie felt an ache in her solar plexus, her fingers hummed, wanting to touch him, needing to touch him. She stepped into the pool. The water was warm and inviting, like a bathtub surrounded by lush trees and filtered sunlight. As she silently stepped toward him his eyes opened and looked directly into hers, as if he’d known she was there all along. He moved toward her, away from the waterfall, running his hands over his face, wiping the water away. Heat rose between them, shimmering, pulsing, and visible. They were only inches away now, bodies glowing with passion, her nipples erect, her body moist with longing. He reached out to touch her when she heard a cry from the woods. Her head snapped toward the sound, searching for its cause. Not finding it she turned toward him once again. He was gone.

~•••~

Heart hammering in her chest, Carrie stifled a little cry as she startled awake. Momentarily squeezing Jake tighter around the waist, Carrie slowly climbed out of her dream and began to get her bearings. How in the Hell do you fall asleep while riding a horse, she thought as she loosened her grip and looked around her at the large and comfortable looking ranch.

Carrie had only seen ranches like this in the movies; the large main house with the wide wrap around porch, the well kept outer buildings that she supposed must house equipment, animals and feed, the corrals with their sturdy fences and well worn dirt paths. Suddenly Carrie felt as if she had stepped onto a movie set and that at any moment Little Joe might ride up, tip his hat, and shoot her one of his charming smiles.

Instead Jake pulled Lady up to the house and reached back with his hand to help Carrie to the ground. Putting her hand in his she felt a warmth and security that she hadn’t remembered feeling in a long time. Brushing the feeling away she hopped down and stretched her long legs, giving Jake a nice view of her backside in the process. Carrie hadn’t got the title of Most Flirtatious in high school for nothing. She smiled to herself as she prolonged the stretch, feeling his eyes on her. When she turned to look up at him she nearly took a step backward. The look in his eyes set her pulse jumping and her stomach quivering.

“I need to take care of Lady, but you go on in the house and tell Ms. Judy that I said to feed you something. Then we can head back and take care of your truck.” Jake’s eyes softened and a smile played at his lips as he nodded her toward the porch.

Carrie could only nod in response as she dutifully headed toward the front door. She had never before found herself at a loss for words, and wasn’t sure she cared for the feeling.
Carrie felt his eyes follow her inside the house. It was only after closing the door behind her that she realized she had been holding her breath. Breathing once again she looked around her at the spacious entryway and living room.

It was large, but warm with plenty of gleaming wood and soft leather furniture. The room was very masculine and yet very inviting. The fireplace, empty for the summer, held the promise of long and cozy winter evenings.

Carrie was a bit surprised to see the wall to wall bookshelves filled with books, many of them leather bound and rare. Reaching up to pull at a random book she was surprised to be holding leather bound copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and found herself both warm and moist at the thought of the big handsome cowboy reading the erotic words found within the book.

Carrie’s stomach growled, momentarily distracting her from the bookshelf. Following her nose she easily found the kitchen. Not seeing anyone about she decided to help herself to a bowl of the delicious smelling soup and warm bread.

💖 Chapter 2 💖

They were under the waterfall again. Carrie could feel the warm water cascading down her naked body. Jakes hands caressed her neck, shoulders, back and her curvaceous bottom. She could feel her body warm to his touch. Her stomach quivered. Her knees trembled. A soft moan escaped her lips as his mouth roamed over chest, breast and stomach. She could barely stand and felt herself sinking toward the water. Jake held her up with his strong hands, bringing her closer to his hungry mouth. He cupped her bottom with his hands and sought her womanhood with his tongue. Carrie gasped as he feasted on her engorged flesh. She grabbed his shoulders urging him on. Carrie could feel the peak just ahead of her when again she heard a cry from the wood at the edge of the pool. Reluctantly she looked for the source of the cry only to find that once again Jake had disappeared and she was left only with a deep wanting and a passion unfulfilled.

~•••~

Carrie woke to a dark and unfamiliar room. She searched her memory trying to recall where she was. Oh yes, Jake’s ranch in NW Montana. Carrie pulled at the cotton t-shirt, brining it to her nose and breathing in Jake’s scent. Now it was all coming back to her.

While Carrie had eaten her supper of homemade soup and bread, Jake had gone back to her truck with gas, but had found that it still wouldn’t start. He had offered to take her into town so that she could stay in a hotel. He had also offered his guest room. Carrie had chosen the guestroom. She loved Jakes’ house, and besides, she loved having an excuse to spend more time around her rescuer.

Jake had brought back Carrie’s bag from the truck and had showed her to a guest room at the end of a long hall on the second floor of the log framed ranch house. He had set her bag down on the floor of the comfortable looking room, tipped his hat while unsuccessfully hiding the hunger in his eyes, and left her to get ready for bed.
Carrie had watched him walk down the hall and disappear into a room at the opposite end. Just watching him walk made her knees weak. He didn’t swagger; he just walked with a kind of confidence that permeated the air around him. It didn’t hurt that he looked so good in those snug jeans he wore.

Carrie had moaned softly and had turned to the bag at the base of the queen sized bed. Carrie was a light packer, especially when she was on the move. Her usual bedroom attire consisted of panties and a tank top. Although the day had been warm the night was cool. Even with the blanket and quilt that called to her invitingly from the bed, she knew she would be cold. Just as she thought she might have to pay her host a little visit, to see if he had anything warmer she could wear, she heard a soft knock at the door. There Jake stood, in nothing but his jeans, holding out a large t-shirt and what looked like flannel pants.

“They might be a bit large, but judging from the size of your bag, I thought you might not have anything warm to wear”.

Carrie had to force herself forward to accept the clothes from his hands. She also had to remind herself to breathe. His hard chest was covered with soft, curly, black hair. Years of working his land had sculpted and carved his body in the same way a river molds the land it cuts through. Carrie could feel her breath coming in small shallow gasps. Her panties were warm with the moist heat of her body. Her eyes were hazy and soft. She could see Jake swallow hard, and there was no mistaking the naked hunger in his eyes as he handed her the clothing.

“Goodnight Carrie. Pleasant dreams”. He looked at her as if deciding something and then turned and walked back down the hall.

“Goodnight… and thank you!” Carrie called after him.

Jake turned toward her, his eyes burning into hers.

“Night.” His smile warmed and softened his features as he turned back toward his own room.

That had been three hours ago. Carrie had had a difficult time falling asleep, but when she had she had slept hard, until she woke up five minutes ago that is. Carrie cast her mind back toward the dream she had been having before she had woken up. She reached under the covers and touched herself, feeling the wet heat that lingered from the unfulfilled passion of her dream. Her soft flesh still tingled as if Jakes mouth had just been there moments before. Carrie brought her wet fingers to her mouth and tasted her own sex before once again pulling Jake’s t-shirt to her face, breathing in his scent.

Restless with longing, Carrie slipped out of bed and wandered toward the window. Pulling back the curtains she could see the full moon cast its’ silvery glow over the ranch. Carrie could feel the cool night air through the window pane. She reached up to touch the window, hoping the chill would cool her heated body so that she could sleep again. As her fingers touched the glass she noticed a movement coming from the pond beyond the corral. It was Jake. She could see his muscular back in the moonlight as he swam in smooth strokes across the water.

Pushing all thoughts of warning from her mind, Carrie headed downstairs and out the door in her bare feet, not stopping until she had reached the water’s edge. At the sound of her approaching feet Jake turned in the water, his eyes locking with hers. Silently, Carrie slipped off the t-shirt and bottoms that Jake had given her only hours earlier. Letting them fall to her feet, Carrie stood in the grass with nothing but moonlight to cover her. The chilly Montana night brushed Carrie with gooseflesh, hardening her nipples until they ached. As Jake swam toward her, Carrie slipped into the cool water and into his waiting arms.

💖 Chapter 3 💖

The water caressed their skin like cool satin. The first shock of the chill dissipated quickly in the heat of Jakes arms. It was just like Carrie’s dream, minus the waterfall. His strong hands pulled her tight against his chest. His lips roamed over temple and cheek and lips. His kisses were as soft as moth’s wings. For a moment he pulled back and gazed intently into her eyes, she felt as if he were looking directly into her soul. He smiled and placed a small and simple kiss at the end of her nose before pulling back to look at her again. Carrie felt at once small and strong as if she could endure anything the world had to throw at her. With Jake she felt invincible.

As time stood still, Carrie’s eyes feasted on Jake. Carrie thought Jake had looked incredible in his clothes, but out of them he was simply spectacular. Lean hard legs rose up to meet a firm round butt that Carrie couldn’t help but caress. Carrie’s mind flashed back to the ride into Jake’s ranch and the inadvertent grabbing of Jake’s crotch. She was pleased to note that he was truly everything she had thought him to be. Jake had both a hardness that was entirely male, and a softness that said he new how to handle those that were weaker than himself.

The dark curly hairs on Jake’s chest tickled her nipples, sending shivers down her spine. Carrie’s hands moved up Jakes back in a slow exploration of the broad planes of hard muscle. Jake moaned as Carrie returned his kisses, covering his neck with small bites and licks as she moved her way down his chest, circling one nipple and than the other with her tongue.

Carrie had dreamt over and over of a hot and intense passion exploding between them. Instead Jake covered her in softness. Gently he lifted Carrie by the waist and settled her against him. Wrapping her legs around him, Carrie met his lips with her own. Warm liquid meeting warm liquid, their lips vanished into the others as if they were one. Carrie could feel the warmth spread down her body until she was sure she glowed like the fireflies that danced about them.

Holding her tight with one arm, Jake allowed his other hand to explore Carrie’s delicate features. Over and over he traced the curve of waist, hip and bottom, until Carrie felt the heat of his hand had left a permanent road map of his passion. Carrie’s breath came at irregular intervals. His touch sent her into tremors. She moaned as she rocked against him, rubbing her clit against the hardness that was trapped between her hips and his.

She opened her neck to his mouth, inviting him to travel its’ length with his firm warm lips. Her entire body felt as if it was on fire. The chill of the night was the only thing keeping her from bursting into flames. Her erect nipples rubbing against the thick dark matting on his chest was slowly driving her over the edge. Carrie felt an unfamiliar urgency to join with this splendid man that was planted so firmly between her legs.

“Please, Jake . . . I want you inside me.” Carrie murmured against his ear.

Just tonight, Carrie thought, I just want tonight, and tomorrow I’ll be gone again.

“Oh, Carrie”. Jake breathed as he settled her on his erect maleness.

Carrie’s rocking took on a new intensity as she moved against Jake. The water stirred around them, the motion of their loving sending wakes to the edges of the pond.

Carrie arched back in Jake’s arms as the throbbing in her pelvis began to build. Jake grazed her nipples with his teeth, taking in one and then the other, teasing them into hard succulent berries. Carrie’s breathing became a pant as she moaned with pleasure. With her fingers laced behind Jake’s head she pulled him closer, encouraging him to take in more of her heat, more of her soft tender skin.

“Oh God Jake . . . harder, fuck me harder”. Carrie pleaded.

“Carrie . . . I’ve wanted you since the moment I saw you in the back of that old pick-up, but I want you slow, I want to taste you, I want to know every inch of you before this night is done.” Jake replied as he lifted Carrie off of him and laid her backwards in the water so that she was floating on her back

The night around them glowed with a million stars, its’ sounds served as a musical back drop to their passion. But Jake and Carrie were ignorant of the dazzling Montana night. The only awareness they had was the touch, scent and sound of the other.

Jake supported Carrie with strong arms while his mouth and lips tickled and teased her inner thigh. Carrie floated with arms outstretched, succumbing to Jake’s intent. She felt like she was being devoured one molecule at a time, and she was helpless to stop it, and wouldn’t have even is she was capable. Jake’s mouth found her neatly trimmed softness as he carefully opened her with his tongue. With the lightest of strokes he lapped at her womanhood until Carrie thought she might burst from the pleasure. The night around them filled with Carrie’s uncontrolled moans of delight. Just when she thought she might split in two, Jake moved away from her lower lips and moved up her belly, nibbling at the tender skin that tasted of the warm sun.

Gently he pulled her to him again, tasting the soft undersides of her breasts, leaving no skin untouched. Carrie clung to Jake, arms wrapped tightly around his neck, as she trembled, balancing on the edge of an orgasm that threatened to consume her. Jake’s hands were in continuous motion, stroking her from leg to long slender neck and back again. Every one of Carrie’s nerve endings were on fire and just as she thought she couldn’t stand any more Jake fit her neatly around him once again.

This time he gave her what she wanted as he drove himself into her, over and over again until the night’s stars seemed to fall around them like fireworks. Carrie clung tighter, taking Jake in as deep as she could, wrapping her legs tight around him in an effort to bring him even closer. As they climbed that peak together Carrie lost all sense of self, every cell a microcosm of a universe of pleasure that seemed focused on this moment and this time. At last they came with a shudder and a release that was primal by nature, but spiritual by design.

Slowly, as the world once again came into view, Jake and Carrie slipped into the coolness of the water, floating in its’ embryonic embrace.

~•••~

Carrie woke slowly from a deep sleep. She stretched, feeling every part of her body report in, every single cell seeming to sigh with pleasure. The night came back to her one glorious detail at a time; the passionately restless dream, discovering Jake out by the pond, the midnight swim, and then the way Jake had carried her back to her room as if she were precious cargo and had deposited her gently into the cozy bed.

The only disappointment had come when Jake had returned to his own room instead of joining her in hers. Carrie wasn’t sure why that had disappointed her. In the past, Carrie would have been all too happy to get rid of her lover after the love making was done. Carrie had always been a solitary girl and liked her space, but she had felt strangely empty when Jake had kissed her forehead and turned away toward his own room. She had almost asked him to stay, but fought back the urge as she didn’t understand where it had come from.

Now as the morning sun streamed through her window, Carrie thought about her options. First, some breakfast, then back out to the truck to see if she could figure out what was wrong with it. After that? Back on the road, she thought, as she once again pulled Jake’s t-shirt to her face breathing in his scent. She couldn’t let a little thing like a sexy cowboy stop her from getting on her way. Carrie pushed away the thought that was on the fringes of her mind. Just where am I going this time? Where do I belong and when am I going to get there?

Carrie stretched again, reaching back for the headboard, feeling the t-shirt slide up her legs. The soft cotton pleasing on her skin, bringing to mind the way Jake’s hands covered her body in an endless caress. Carrie moistened at the thought and slowly, unconsciously, touched herself as she remembered the way Jake’s lips had ravished her breasts. Carrie’s other hand reached up to touch her nipples, finding them straining the fabric of the shirt. Slowly she circled one and then the other as her tongue traced the edge of her lips. Fed by her memories from the night before, Carrie tilted her pelvis giving her own fingers access to her hungry mound. She found herself warm and wet as she slipped inside, feeling the space that had been so recently occupied by Jake. Again she found her clit, moaning with pleasure as she sought release from the mounting pressure. As her built up pressure found its’ freedom, Jakes’ name escaped her lips. With a soft gasp, she sank back against the pillows, resting in the afterglow of her orgasm, never knowing that Jake, standing on the other side of her door holding a breakfast tray, had heard the whole thing.

💖 Chapter 4 💖

Jake brushed Lady with loving attention, occasionally giving her a scratch behind the ears or bit of apple as he went. She and the other animals had already been taken care of that morning by his ranch hands, but Jake always gave Lady a little extra attention. They had been through a lot together. She had been the first horse Jake had brought to the ranch 15 years ago. The only other living being that had been around that long was Ms. Judy, the house keeper. Come to think of it, Jake didn’t know what he would do without either one of them. The only ladies in his life to ever stay put, the only ones he could truly count on. Of course, neither Lady nor Ms. Judy could tend to the aching need Jake had felt ever since he had first laid eyes on Carrie.

As Jake ran his hands down the gleaming sides of his favorite horse, his memory traveled to how it had felt to run his hands over Carrie’s glistening skin. Jake’s hands grew hot at the memory and he found himself uncomfortable in his jeans once again. He had wanted her from the moment he’d met her, but he knew she was the traveling kind, and Jake had just never been the kind of man to take sex casually. He wouldn’t have admitted it to most of his buddies, but he knew the difference between making love and sex, and he knew which he preferred.

But when Carrie stood there at the edge of the pond, with the moonlight casting its magical glow on her perfect skin, Jake had been powerless. He would never forget the way she looked as she stood there, completely nude, filled with the heat of desire. Her shoulders were slender and strong, her waist slim, her breasts full and her bottom round. Jakes hands involuntarily clenched as he thought about holding her luscious backside in them, and pulling her close. Jake’s heart beat harder in his chest as he remembered the way Carrie had so willingly wrapped her legs around him, giving in to her own passions.

God, he looks good, Carrie thought as she stood in the shadows watching Jake brush Lady. Big and solid and steady, like the land that he worked. Goose flesh broke out on Carries’ skin as she thought about Jakes big, solid, steady hands stroking her from neck to bottom and back. An experience she would definitely like to repeat. If only there was time she thought, as she stepped from the shadows and into Jake’s line of sight.

Jake felt her presence before he saw her. Maybe it was the smell of fresh scrubbed skin that caught his attention, but he knew she was there, and the aching in his loins only increased with the knowledge. Jake looked up to find Carrie leaning against the stall door. She was dressed casually in jeans and one of his college sweatshirts. She had never looked better.

“Nice sweatshirt.” Jake said as he lovingly stroked ladies hind end.

“I hope you don’t mind. I know I should have asked you first, but I wasn’t sure where you were at, or when you’d be back, and it’s a little chilly out this morning.” Carrie batted her big green eyes at Jake and he could only smile.

“So, who went to Harvard?” Carrie asked as she slowly traced a knot in the stall door.

“I did.” Said Jake.

“You went to Harvard? Impressive. Kind of a long way for a cowboy to go isn’t it?”

“It’s what my mom wanted.”

Jake was now across from Carrie, with only the stall door between them. Carrie could feel the heat from his gaze as he mentally slipped his hands under the sweatshirt to feel her soft skin. Goose flesh rose on Carrie’s arms as she caught the scent of him. She had an almost uncontrollable urge to bury her head in his neck so that she could taste his skin with her lips. The heat from the night before hadn’t gone out. The fire had only been dulled to embers, which threatened to ignite once again.

Jake reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind Carrie’s ear. His touch sent shivers down her spine. A trickle of passion moistened her panties as his hand moved to cup her chin, his thumb tracing her jaw. Jake’s forefinger moved lightly across Carrie’s lips. Carrie found it hard to breathe and harder to stand. Her mouth parted, inviting Jake to enter its moist depth.

“Have you ever wondered what it feels like for a man to be inside a woman?” Jake whispered, so low that Carrie almost wasn’t sure he had said it.

There was a humming in her ears that seemed to vibrate from her very soul.

“Yes”. She breathed, as she slowly circled Jake’s forefinger with her tongue.

Jake continued his seduction in the soft low tones reserved for lovers. “Take my finger into your mouth. You feel the snug, wet warmth?”

Carrie could only nod as she continued to explore Jake’s finger with her tongue. Sucking and caressing him with her mouth. Never in Carrie’s entire life had a man spoken to her like that. Carrie wanted to climb over the stall door and have her way with Jake right there in Lady’s stall.

Jake slipped his finger from her mouth. Carried moaned in protest, wanting to feel him in her mouth again. Jake ran his moistened finger over her lips, eliciting another moan, this one of pleasure.

“Did you like that?” Jake whispered as his lips grazed Carrie’s neck.

“Hmmmm . . . mmmm.” Carrie seemed incapable of speech.

“That’s what it feels like. Warm, wet and soft, yet powerful. That’s the way you felt last night Carrie.”

The humming in Carrie’s ears only increased as the blood flow to her brain decreased.

“Jake?”

“Yes?” He whispered as he continued to nibble on the tender skin at the base of her neck.

“Why didn’t you stay with me last night?”

Somewhere in the back of Carrie’s mind she slapped her own forehead.

Jake stopped in mid kiss, his lips hovering above her neck for a brief moment before he pulled back to look into Carrie’s deep green eyes.

“I didn’t figure you for the staying kind.”

For a moment time stood still. Carrie and Jake were trapped somewhere between hazy desire and the cold splash of reality.

Carrie wanted to slap him. His words stung in places she thought had been closed off for good. Tears threatened to blur her vision. She knew he was right. She wasn’t the “staying” kind. But that was for her to know, not Jake. How could he possibly know that about her? They’d known each other for less then 24 hours and already he was telling her who she was. Carrie could feel anger replacing the desire that had been there moments before. She clenched her fists in response to her feelings, but held them tight against her body, which had now gone rigid.

“You’re right. I’m not.” Blinking back her tears, Carrie turned from the warmth of the barn and walked out into the cold morning.

She could feel Jake’s eyes on her as she stalked away. Her heart begged him to call after her, while her mind cursed his very existence. The call never came, so she kept walking until she was out of hearing distance of the ranch. She wasn’t exactly sure how to get to the truck, but there was no way in Hell she was going back to ask for Jake’s help. So she just kept walking in the general direction of the highway, all the while pretending that her heart wasn’t bleeding.

💖 Chapter 5 💖

By the time Carrie had reached the truck her temper had softened, leaving a dull ache in her throat. Why am I letting this cowboy get to me? She thought as she opened the truck door to climb inside. Yes, he’s handsome, but I’ve had handsome. He’s smart, that’s for sure. I’m mean they don’t let just anybody into Harvard.

Carrie put the key into the ignition and gave it a turn. Nothing. Carrie sighed, took a deep breath and turned the key again. Still nothing. Carrie knew every inch of this truck. The one good thing her father had given her was his love for cars. Carrie rested her head against the steering wheel. Just where am I going to get a new solenoid for my starter out here in the middle of no where?! Carrie sighed again. She would have to walk back to the ranch, and worst of all, she would have to ask for Jake’s help, the prospect of which really lacked appeal.

I need to get on the road. I may not know where I’m going, but it’s certainly not here. I just can’t be around Jake, Carrie thought as the warm sun kissed her cheeks through the truck window. He’s too… real. Well, that sounds stupid.

Carrie could feel the warmth of the sun seeping into her skin and running, like liquid, through her insides. Carrie’s truck was the closest thing she had to a home. It had been her grandpa’s truck. Sometimes, when she was quite and still, just like now, she could still smell her grandpa’s cologne, and it made her ache.

Carrie thought of her grandfather now, and could hear his words ringing through her mind… “Carrie honey, life is what you make it. You need to stop all this running around and find yourself some roots. And if you don’t find roots, then plant the damn tree yourself.”

Carrie smiled at the memory, and silently wished her grandpa was with her now. She was feeling things that she hadn’t felt in a long time. Her instinct was to get going and to keep going, to get up at dawn and head into the sun.

Then she thought of Jake’s hand on her cheek, his finger caressing her lips, his deep blue eyes pulling at some place inside her that she hadn’t visited in so long. The warm sun that had unknowingly melted away the anger that had collected in her throat, moved further down Carrie’s body, seeping in to places private and sweet. Carried unbuttoned the top of her jeans and slipped her hand under her panties, feeling the wet rush that had collected there. Just thinking about Jake made her throb and ache. With her other hand she cupped a breast, tenderly stroking her nipple with her thumb. Her thoughts were of moonlight and soft kisses, warm tongues searching secret places. Softly, Carrie stroked herself, feeling the rise of heat that carried her to memories of strong hands and a sweet rush of desire that flowed over her in an uncontrollable wave. Her climax came over her suddenly, causing Carrie to scream out in pleasure, gripping the steering wheel with one hand, while the other lay still in her lap, resting softly on her engorged sex.

As her breath slowed, Carrie became aware of her surroundings. A breeze blew in through the window, playing with her hair. Carrie’s eyes were closed and she thought she just might take a little nap when a shadow fell across her face. Carrie, knowing it was Jake coming to apologize, kept her eyes closed, determined to ignore him, but pleased none the less.

When, after several minutes, he still hadn’t said anything, Carrie grew tired of waiting. Without opening her eyes she gave a large sigh.

“Just get it over with. Apologies are much easier if you get them done quickly.”

“Really? I didn’t know I had something to apologize for. I can promise you that if I did do something to hurt you I would, of course, apologize immediately.”

Carrie felt her stomach grow cold and her pulse race. Not because she didn’t get her apology, but because the voice that drifted in so casually from the outside wasn’t Jakes. Carrie slowly opened her eyes, and, shading them against the sunlight, looked out her window at the owner of the voice.

“Hello.”

His voice was rich and slightly… slick. He was tall, almost as tall as Jake, but with a smaller build. Carrie could see jet black side burns peeking out from under his jet black cowboy hat. He was handsome, in his own way, but there was something about his looks that gave Carrie an odd cold feeling. She couldn’t exactly place a finger on it though. She tried to push the feeling away, chiding herself for jumping to conclusions.

Not even wanting to know how long the stranger had been there, Carrie tilted up her chin, forcing a show of calm on her face.

“Hello. And who exactly are you? One of Jake’s ranch hands?”

His laugh was deep and mocking.

“One of Jake’s ranch hands? No, I don’t think so. My name is Cort. Cort Richland. And who may I ask are you? One of Jake’s girls from town?”

Anger flashed in Carrie’s eyes. Whether it was the insinuation that she was a tramp, or the thought that Jake had “girls”, that made her mad she wasn’t sure.

“No. I’m not one of Jake’s girls. My truck broke down yesterday and Jake found me out here. I stayed at his ranch last night. As soon as I can get my truck fixed I’ll be out of here.”

“Beggin’ your pardon mamm. Didn’t mean to offend you.” Cort’s eyes mocked her, even when his words seemed sincere.

“Would you like me to take a look?” He said, as he slid off his horse to the ground.

Carrie’s heart beat faster as Cort sauntered toward the truck. She quickly jumped out of the cab, not wanting to be stuck in side. She couldn’t quite put a finger on it, but she didn’t trust this man, and didn’t want to give him any advantages over her.

Cort watched Carrie as she stood before him, closing the truck door.

“You seem to have forgotten something.” Cort’s eyes traveled over Carrie’s sexy curves, arriving at the top button of her jeans.

Carrie grew hot again, thinking that this man may have witnessed her private moment. Not wanting to show any weakness, Carrie quickly buttoned the top of her jeans without ever removing her eyes from the dark stranger.

“Thank you for your offer, but I can take care of the truck myself. I just need to get back to Jake’s ranch and see about getting a part for it.”

“Well, I’d be happy to take you there if you’d like.” Cort moved closer to Carrie, standing only a few feet away.

Carrie swallowed and stood her ground. She would not show this man that he made her nervous.

“No thanks. I can walk. It will do me good.”

Cort stepped closer still, so that Carrie had no choice but to back up a step. She found herself backed into the door of her truck, with no place to go. Her eyes darted to the left and then the right, hoping she would see Jake and Lady riding out of the sun to rescue her once again.

💖 Chapter 6 💖

Jake had watched Carrie walk away until she was out of sight. If anyone had been watching him they would have thought him relaxed and unconcerned. Nothing could be further from the truth. When Carrie had turned away, Jake had wanted to ask her to stay. He wanted to tell her he was sorry, to take her in his arms, and kiss her until she couldn’t imagine ever leaving. Instead he had stood, rooted to the barn floor, and silently cursed himself for his stupidity.

Of course, he was right, Carrie wasn’t the staying kind. And that knowledge was the truth that had kept him glued in place while she walked away into the crisp morning. What he had said had hurt her, and he regretted that, but it had also been the truth, and they both knew it.

When she had faded from sight, Jake turned to lead Lady out to pasture. Lady had looked at him with baleful eyes, as if to say “What were you thinking?”

“I didn’t say anything but the truth.” Jake said to his horse as he grabbed her lead, taking her outside. “We don’t need her anyway. We do just fine on our own, don’t we lady?”

Jake turned to look at his horse once more, only to find that she was looking away, as if she refused to meet his eyes. Jake could only sigh as he opened the gate to the North pasture and unhooked Lady from her lead. Patting her on the bottom, Jake watched as she trotted into the field to look for the last sprigs of summer grasses.

Jake leaned against the gate. The sun was beginning to warm the air. Jake breathed deep, taking in the scent of earth, horse and the wildflowers that grew along the fence posts. The sweet scent of the flowers reminded him of Carrie.

What has that woman done to me?! I can’t seem to go five minutes without thinking about her, the way her hair is tousled, as if she just got out of bed, and had a good time while she was there. He thought about her green eyes and how they looked like forest pools, inviting and cool, reflecting the rays of the sun as it seeped through the trees. Her skin was so soft, it was like satin. He was almost afraid to touch her with his work worn hands, as if their coarseness would snag her skin like fabric.

Jake’s mind wandered to Carrie’s trim waist and round bottom, and he grew hard again. He wanted to feel her bottom tucked into him as they curled together in sleep. He wanted to listen to her breath, soft and even, as she dreamt. He wanted to softly caress her skin, trailing his fingers down her feminine curves, tracing her from hip to shoulder, until she stirred in her sleep. He could imagine her stretching against him, her back arching and her beautiful round breasts pushing at the soft cotton of her t-shirt. His hands flexed and curled as he thought about holding Carrie’s breasts in his hands, running his thumbs in circles around her hardening nipples. Jake’s pants grew tight again as the, now familiar, bulge at the front pants increased in size. Unconsciously Jake, touched himself as he imagined Carrie, turning to him in her growing excitement. He imagined it was Carrie’s hand stroking his hardness until he was wet with anticipation. Jake could feel his heart beat harder in his chest as he thought about Carrie’s gentle hands stroking him as her lips nibbled and bit his neck and shoulders. Jake involuntarily shuddered at the vivid imagery that coursed through his brain and body.

“Jake?”

“Geezus!” Jake jumped internally at the sound of his lead ranch hands voice.

“Hey, boss, didn’t mean to startle you. I just thought you should know that Chuck saw Colton today. Guess he’s back.”

Rick had been with Jake for the last 10 years and was a loyal as they come. Rick was also very aware of the bad blood between Jake and Colton. Jake was fine as long as he knew Colton was in town, but the last time he had run into him unexpectedly things had become ugly real quick. It was best that Jake knew Colton was back, although Rick hated to put such a damper on a lovely day. Jake had looked downright . . . dreamy, before Rick had interrupted him. He couldn’t help but wonder if the dreamy state had anything to do with that pretty little filly Jake had brought to the ranch the night before. He knew he’d had a dream or two about her, since he’d caught a glimpse of her last night. Of course Rick also knew that everything on this ranch belonged to Jake . . . everything, and he wasn’t about to jeopardize his job over a pretty young thing like that little blonde.

“Colton’s back?” Jake’s eyes turned a dark and stormy blue as Colton’s name passed his lips.

“I thought he was going to let Tony run things here, while he stayed in New York. I wonder what’s going on over there.” Jake scratched at the two days worth of growth on his face as he digested the new information.

“When did Chuck say he saw him?”

“About 20 minutes ago. Chuck was on his way back from town when he saw Colton riding his property. He came to find me right away to let me know.

Jake’s face went pale as he realized that Carrie was out there by herself.

“Is everything ok Boss?”

“I don’t know. That little gal I found out by the highway took off to take a look at her truck a little while ago. I’d hate for Colton to find her out there by herself. I’m going to run out there and see if there is anything I can do to help.” Jake’s mind raced as he turned toward the house.

“You want me to go with you?”

“No, no, I’m sure everything is fine. I’ll just check it out to make sure. I’ll be back in a bit.” Jake tossed over his shoulder as he dashed toward the truck.

Rick watched him go, thinking he had never seen Jake so jumpy before. That boy was smitten as sure as the sun would set in the west. Colton was bad blood though, and Jake was right to go check up on the little gal. Rick shook his head as he headed toward tool shed.

Jake’s foot pressed the pedal a little harder than usual as he sped up the dirt driveway toward the road ahead. Thoughts of Colton’s hands on Carrie, urged him forward at a faster than normal speed. His own hands clenched the wheel as if it were Colton’s throat. He hardly needed an excuse to choke the man, but if he had touched one hair on Carrie’s head he would kill him.

Dust churned behind him as turned left on to the highway. Not far up the road he could see Carrie’s truck, and Colton’s horse, but where were Carrie and Colton? Jake clenched the wheel tighter as he sped toward Carrie’s rescue.

💖 Chapter 7 💖

As Jake approached Carrie’s truck he saw Colton come around the tailgate, heading for his horse. Colton seemed put out and Jake couldn’t help but notice that he was limping. Jake hoped, for Colton’s sake, that he was in much worse condition than Carrie. If Colton had so much as lain a finger on her… …Jake flexed his fist as he came to a dusty halt just feet from Carrie’s truck.

Colton had already mounted his horse as Jake hopped out of his truck. The white hot anger in Jake’s eyes met the cold carelessness of Colton’s as the two locked stares.

“Where’s Carrie?”

Jake tossed his words as if they were daggers of accusation rather than a mere question.

“Half way to your place I would suspect. Lively little filly. Have you tried her yet?”

Colton’s tone mocked Jake as he sat casually in his saddle.

Jake’s boiling point was reached in an instant as he lunged for Colton’s boot. Colton reigned in his horse and danced away from Jake’s grasp, laughing as he turned toward his family home in a full gallop.

Jake cursed at Colton’s fleeing back as he jumped back in his truck, heading off road to find Carrie, praying he wouldn’t find the worst.

Carrie squeezed back tears as she continued her long hike back to Jake’s ranch. And just where was Jake anyway?! For a man that had seemed made for the role of hero he had certainly fallen short today. He was supposed to have ridden up on his faithful stead, punch Colton in the mouth, and carry her off into the sunset. Instead she’d had to handle the whole thing herself, not that she couldn’t take care of herself, she could. But she had come to think of Jake as someone more than just your average man, and she couldn’t help but wish he had shown up to defend her in her moment of need.

Carrie took a shaky breath and leaned up against an oak that must have been at least 100 years old. Its’ leaves, turning with the season, sheltered her from the bright sun as she gave in to her tears. She felt ridiculous for behaving like a child. Nothing had happened… really. Carrie thought about the large bruise Colton was sure to have on his shin in the morning from the kick she had given him when he had blocked her in by the truck. She felt a smile tug at her lips at the memory.

Then tears came to her eyes again as she remembered the way Colton had grabbed her arm as she had stalked away from him in the direction of Jake’s ranch. His grip was like an iron vice. Carrie’s hand automatically massaged her upper arm thinking about her own likely bruises. Colton’s voice had made a sickening contrast to his vice like grip. It had been soft and sweet, as if he was trying to talk someone off the ledge of a building.

“What the Hell was that? I’m just trying to have a little conversation with a sexy gal who can’t seem to keep her pants buttoned.”

Carrie could feel her knees shake, but she was determined not to let her fear show.

“I don’t know what you are talking about, but where I come from it is not ok to corner a girl against her own truck while making snide innuendos. And if that is what you call a little conversation, then I would say you need to brush up on your communication skills. Now let go of my arm.”

Carrie held her breath as she watched Colton calculate the situation behind his cold dark eyes. She knew there was no one around to hear her scream, and that one year of on again off again martial arts training were no match for Colton’s strong physique. Her only hope was that Colton would come to his senses. She didn’t need to be a psychic to know what was going on in his mind.

Colton released her arm without losing contact with her eyes.

“You’ve got me all wrong Miss. Sorry for the misunderstanding. You have a nice day now.”

Carrie forced herself to swallow and turned toward Jake’s ranch. As she put one foot in front of the other she could feel Colton’s eyes on her back. She had wished he would just turn away, but he continued to stare at her until she was out of sight. She hadn’t dared turn around or stop until she had reached the shade of the oak.

As the sun warmed the air around her Carrie drew strength from the sturdy trunk of the ancient oak. She felt a stillness surround her and began to feel settled and calm when the moment was broken by the sound of an approaching truck. Oh my God. Had Colton gone back to his ranch to get his truck and come after her again? Carrie put her hand to her eyes to shade them further from the sun in an attempt to identify the owner of the approaching truck.

Jake’s first reaction at seeing Carrie standing under the old oak was one of immense relief. He jumped out of the truck seconds after bringing it to an abrupt stop a few yards from where Carrie stood. Jake covered the distance in two steps and pulled Carrie into his arms. Tears threatened to spill down Carrie’s cheeks again as she melted into Jake’s embrace. Jake pulled back a moment, running his eyes over Carrie, looking for any sign of a struggle or harm. Not finding any he crushed her to his chest once more. Jake planted tender kisses on the top of her head as her arms returned his hug with equal intensity. Jake found that just holding her wasn’t enough. He couldn’t get the thought of Colton’s smirk out of his head. The thought that he may have touched Carrie drove him crazy, and was having a strange affect on his libido. Colton, he wanted to crush with his fists. Carrie, he wanted to cover and posses with his body. He wanted her with an urgency he had never felt before.

Jake wrapped his large fingers around the hair at the back of Carrie’s pretty blonde head and pulled it back until her face and neck were exposed to him. A brief look in Carrie’s eyes told him that she understood completely, and not only that she understood that he wanted to posses her, but that she wanted the same. Then all Hell broke loose. It seemed that Jakes lips and mouth were everywhere at once, her neck, her lips, and her face. His hands slipped under the sweatshirt she was wearing and found the clasp to her satin and lace bra, before they each took hold of a breast. There was nothing mean about his touch, but there was nothing gentle either. The pent up energy he had been feeling ever since he found out that Carrie was out here alone with Colton, spilled out and onto Carrie. Carrie matched his energy with her own, responding to the roughness of his touch with her own heated passion.

As Jake grasped her breasts he squeezed each nipple in turn, eliciting a loud moan of approval from Carrie. Carrie wrapped her arms around Jake’s neck and her legs around his waist, pulling him closer with her strong thighs. Jake ground himself into Carrie, using the tree as his support, as he continued to ravage her neck with his lips and teeth.

“Oh God Jake. Yes, yes…” Carrie moaned as Jake held her to him with one arm and lifted her sweatshirt with the other.

His lips found her nipples erect and hard. He consumed one and the other, biting and teasing them until Carrie dripped with pleasure.

“Jake, I want you inside me. Please… Jake… now.” Carrie panted as she grasped the back of Jakes head with her hands, arching herself into him, wanting him to swallow her whole.

Jake let go of her long enough to work the zipper on her jeans and his own. Quickly dispensing with their pants he pulled her to him again. Carrie wrapped herself around Jake and quickly slid herself down his long hard shaft. A gasp escaped both of them as Jake rammed himself into Carrie. Somewhere in the back of his mind he was appalled at his own animalistic behavior, but he couldn’t help himself. He was a man possessed. He wanted Carrie. He wanted to own her body and make her scream with the pleasure of his love. Over and over he pounded himself into her. Sweat poured from both of them as the heat of their lovemaking grew in intensity.

“Oh, God, yes Jake. Harder… harder… fuck me harder.”

Carrie could only hold on to Jake as he filled her with himself over and over again. She wanted to explode from the pleasure of his hardness sliding in and out of her slick wet heat.

“Carrie… oh… God, I want you… you feel so good…”

As they each called out the name of the other, Jake came inside Carrie with a sudden explosion that rocked them both. Time froze as they stood, Jake leaning against the solid oak tree, Carrie wrapped around him as if she were made to be a part of him. Time slowly began to start again as they both became acutely aware of the power of what they had just shared, and the place in which they had just shared it. Slowly they disentangled themselves. Jake gently set Carrie on her feet and helped her to collect her jeans before tugging on his own. Suddenly ashamed of his rough behavior Jake started to apologize to Carrie.

“Carrie, I’m so sor…”

Carrie put a finger to his lips and shook her head.

“No. Do not apologize for what just happened. You know it was what I wanted. Do not apologize for something that I am not sorry for.”

Jake smiled a small sexy smile and pulled her to him… gently this time. As his hands brushed her hair back from her face, his lips found hers and kissed them with a tenderness that spoke of more than just affection.

“You’re right. I’m not sorry. I’m only sorry I didn’t find you sooner. Did he touch you? Because if he did…”

As thoughts of Colton came flooding back Carrie felt herself go rigid.

“Carrie? Did he touch you? Did he threaten you in anyway?”

Carrie wanted to tell Jake the truth, but the look in his eyes gave her pause. She had read in books of murderous looks, but she had never seen one before now. The last thing she wanted was for her, better late than never, hero to go rushing off to defend her honor only to get in some big macho fight. And Colton hadn’t harmed her. If he had threatened her it had been a veiled threat. No, better to keep her little interaction with Colton Richland to herself.

“No, Jake. He didn’t touch me, and he didn’t threaten me. We just had a little chat and then I headed back toward the ranch.”

Carrie’s eyes were guarded. Jake new she wasn’t telling everything, but decided to let it go for the moment. She didn’t seem to be harmed in any way and he really wanted to get her back to the ranch. They could discuss Colton later. He would find out what happened, but he could see that she needed some time and he would give it to her.

“Carrie, you stay away from him. He can’t be trusted. Do you understand me?”

Carrie felt herself go rigid again. How dare he tell her what to do! How dare he treat her like a child! She hadn’t needed a father growing up and she certainly didn’t need one now.

“I’m not a two year old Jake, and you aren’t the boss of me.”

Realizing exactly how childish she sounded she pulled herself away from his grasp and headed toward the truck. She thought about continuing her walk all the way to the ranch, but realized that she was too exhausted from the morning’s events, and wouldn’t have made it far. Carrie decided the silent treatment would have to do instead.

As Jake watched Carrie stomp toward the truck he rolled his eyes and let loose a deep sigh. Here we ago again, he thought, as he slowly followed her toward the waiting truck cab.
