Perfect The Art of Small Talk

Learn to leave a lasting impression...

What is small talk? Some define it as meaningless conversation used to fill empty silences. I prefer to view it as an opportunity to make a lasting impression with the person you are talking with. If you're in a social situation where you need to make small talk, instead of dreading the useless chatter that usually goes on, strive to make dating contacts with interesting conversation instead!

Rules of Engagement:

First, avoid the typical conversational drivel that everyone else uses. Comments about the weather and such are a clear sign you have run out of things to talk about. Make yourself appear to be an interesting conversationalist by choosing topics that are of interest to you and the person you're talking to.

Second, make yourself comfortable. People will be more receptive to having a conversation with you if you approach them with a smile and an easy manner.

Above all things, be yourself. There really isn't any point in getting to know someone if you're not going to reveal who you really are. It may seem to make the person like you better if you're pretending to be someone else. But, are they really interested in you, or who you are pretending to be?

Engaging Their Interest:

Talk about things you know. Don't EVER act like you know about something that you don't. It is much more embarrassing to be caught in a lie, than to admit your lack of knowledge on the subject.

Pick a topic based on a current event. Avoid topics that would create a heated debate. The point is to make yourself appear more interesting, not argumentative.

Talk about a new or upcoming move, concert or other event in your city. These topics are excellent for using as segues to asking for a date. When a person shows interest in the event, ask if they want to go with you.

Ask people about their work, hobbies or school. People love to talk about themselves, so let them!

Closing The Deal:

After a great conversation with someone it is only natural to want to see them again. Take advantage of this and be sure to ask for a date or arrange for a future meeting with the person.
