Materials

  • baby food jars (large for ghosts-small for pumpkins)
  • white glue or Mod-Podge
  • tissue paper - white, yellow, and orange
  • black permanent marker
  • green raffia

Instructions:
Last year my daughter and I made adorable ghost and pumpkin votive holders not only for our house, but for teacher gifts as well. Without the candle, they can be given as a party favor filled with treats. To prepare your supplies, make sure your jar is clean and dry. Dilute the glue to a consistency thin enough for a paint brush or use a decoupage medium. Tear your tissue paper into piece about 1-inch square.

Paint some of the glue/decoupage medium on about half of the jar. Apply the torn pieces of tissue paper to the glue. Repeat this until the jar is completely covered. Kit said she applied three layers of paper. You can experiment to get the results you want. Make sure you allow each layer to dry before you add another.

Once your jar is completely dry, use a marker to draw on any acial or other features you want. You can also use paper scraps to make the face. Now you can place a safety tea light into the jar or fill it with treats. For a finishing touch, tie a piece of green raffia around the top. It couldn't hurt to write a small note about removing the raffia before lighting the candle. As always, NEVER leave lit candles unattended.

Salty Vixen's Tips: Using torn paper instead of cut, adds a nice texture to this tissue decoupage. Combine orange and yellow paper for a realistic texture to the pumpkin.
