Simple Diet Tips for a Healthier YOU!

Americans eat meals away from home 29% of the time, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Going out to eat can make sticking to your diet extremely challenging. It is very difficult to remain loyal to your dieting goals when faced with delicious, but often fattening or unhealthy, food choices. Eating out should not be an excuse to make poor food choices. You can enjoy a healthy meal away from home by following the tips below.

Drink water:

Drinking water or another drink low in calories and fat will allow you to eat more of your entree without worrying about how many calories are in each bite. Drinking water both before and during your meal will also help you feel fuller faster, and decrease the likelihood that you will overeat or order dessert.

Skip the bread:
Either skip the pre-meal bread, or ask for whole wheat rolls or crackers instead. Be certain you do not add butter or jam to the bread you are consuming. If you will be ordering a sandwich, specify when you place the order that the bread should be whole wheat.

Do not skip the salad:
A restaurant salad can be a great source of vegetables and fruit. You will get a boost of vitamins while also filling up some empty space in your stomach with something healthy.

Ask for salad dressing on the side:
A salad ceases to be healthy when it is dripping with high-fat salad dressing. Ask for a lower-fat version of dressing if it is available, and then use only a small amount on your salad.

Order smaller portions:
Request a lunch-sized portion of your main dish, or see if the restaurant will allow you something from the children’s menu. If not, you can simply order an appetizer as your main dish, or share your plate of food with a friend.

Choose healthy dishes:
Choose main dishes that do not include creamy sauces or large amounts of butter. Avoid fried foods, and opt for steamed or grilled dishes instead.

Choose healthy sides:
If you have a choice of side dishes when ordering your entree, choose fresh or steamed vegetables and avoid potatoes or french fries. Ask if fruit can be served with your meal, and do not hesitate to skip the side dishes completely if no healthy options are available. Do not order a dish simply because it is included in the meal price, even if you intend not to eat it. Chances are, if it is sitting on your plate, you will be tempted to have at least a bite or two.

Avoid alcoholic drinks:
Alcohol adds empty calories, often comes mixed with sugary drinks, and may impair your ability to make nutritional food choices while you are out.
